IMM 2017 – Prague – Business session report

42 delegates, 20 guests and 8 potential members from 6 countries (Hungary,  Ukraine, Denmark, Czech Republic, Finland and Slovakia) attended our latest IMM at the Mariott Hotel in Prague on 17-20 may 2017, and it was definitely a great meeting, in an beautiful city, with a very sunny weather !

Introduction to taxation in the Czech Republic

Jan Kotala, Partner and Tax Advisor (EKP - Czech Republic)

Biography :

Jan is a founding partner of EKP. When studying at the University of Economics in Prague, he worked in an advertising agency as an economist and then at the tax department of a consulting company. Jan was a team member of consultants and advocates, who accomplished the restructuring of the debt of a significant sports facility in the Czech Republic, and he represented his clients in tax conflicts with the Financial Administration of the Czech Republic. Jan Kotala is also a member of the founders of the conference called the Tax Forum, which hosts experts from the Financial Administration of the Czech Republic and revenue offices. Jan is a member of the Chamber of Tax Consultants in the Czech Republic in tax administration and value added tax sections. His specialization is tax conflicts and value added tax.

The presentation covered the following aspects: Introduction to taxation in the Czech republic, effective tax rate, tax compliance index, special taxation rules in the Czech Republic.

Stephen Booth, Director of Policy and Research (Open Europe)

Biography :

Stephen Booth is Director of Policy and Research at the think tank Open Europe. While at Open Europe he has written extensively on UK-EU relations, including trade, regulation, immigration, and justice and home affairs policy. He previously led Open Europe’s work on EU reform and, since the EU referendum, he has co-authored reports on UK-EU financial services trade, how to safeguard UK-EU trade outside the Customs Union and how the UK should trade prioritise trading relationships beyond the EU. Stephen comments regularly on EU affairs and Brexit in the print and broadcast media. Stephen holds an undergraduate degree in political science and was awarded the Jean Monnet Prize for his master’s degree in European studies from the University of Sussex.

Biography :

Dr. Tillmann Lauk (L.L.M.) is Chairman of the advisory board at DIWA-GRUPPE, a German company specialized in the decontamination of drinking water systems and book author.
From 1997 to 2008 he held various executive positions in the German industry, including the Global Executive Management Board of Deutsche Bank AG, and as co-founder and CEO of a Deutsche Bank backed venture capital
fund which received 2003 an award from the European Venture Capital Association (EVCA) for the “Best Technology Exit of the Year behind Yell”.
Between 1994 and 1997 he was CFO in a stock-listed, medium-sized manufacturing company where he successfully managed a massive turn-around to profitability. Until 1994 Tillmann worked 6 years as consultant at The Boston Consulting Group. Tillmann studied law and protestant theology.
As a Fulbright Scholar he gained a postgraduate degree at Columbia Law- and Business School, New York. He is author of the book “The Triple Crisis of Western Capitalism – Democracy, Banking and Currency” (Palgrave-Macmillan, London/New York, 2014).

Biographies :

Fergus is a Partner and Director at Spry Roughley. He is a Chartered Accountant with a Bachelor of Economics degree and a Masters in Forensic Accounting.
As the assigned Innovation and Development Director at the firm, part Fergus’ role is to review and implement innovative ideas and new technology offerings to ensure that Spry Roughley utilises the most current solutions for our internal systems and processes and our client service offerings.

Martin is the founding Partner and Managing Director of Spry Roughley in Sydney. He is a Chartered Accountant with a Bachelor of Economics degree and a Diploma in Financial Planning. Martin’s vision for the firm from its inception in 1989 is to be the best they can be in technical expertise and client service, built around deep client knowledge, with the best people, systems and processes available to us. Spry Roughley has 4 Directors and a total head count of 23 people.
